130 Fulton St or 17 Maiden Lane, New York City - Mabie Todd and
Bard started to produce high quality fountain pens in the 1880’s.
Previously they made dip pens. Bard was eventually dropped from the name.
They sold the Swan pen as their top of the line offering. Early pens
were high quality eyedropper fillers and many were overlays. Later they
offered high quality lever fill pens in hard rubber and eventually
plastic. They created an English branch which became one of England's
major pen companies. Swan lever are extremely prone to wear and pitting.
I have seen mint unused Swan pens with levers that have no gold plating
left. They also sold lower quality pens under the names Swallow and
Blackbird. The Eternal models were their lifetime guaranteed pens. Later
pens are of medium quality. Production ceased in 1938. The end of the line
models weren’t even signed.
