John Foley was one of the premier gold dip pen [nib] manufacturers.
He started back in the late 1840s or early 1850s. His son went to
work for Aikin Lambert and in 1888 A-L started selling a dip nib
that had the "Foley" name on it. Foley Sr got an injunction against
A-L and they stopped selling the A-L Foley nibs. A few weeks
later Foley Jr started selling Foley nibs on his own from 5 Dey st,
which was either in the A_L building or right next door. These nibs
were marked John Foley but the A-L markings were left off. Foley Sr
tried to get an injunction against his son but I don't think he was
successful this time. When Foley Sr moved out of his Astor House
location around 1893, his son moved right in and set up as John
Foley Pens. At this point I am not sure which Foley was selling
what. The nibs and pens could be from either company. By 1899
Foley Jr was bankrupt and the business was in his wife's name. He
claimed he had no job in court and just spent a lot of time at the
Dey St store. The Foley fountain pens came out in the 1880s and were |
