Eagle Pencil Company
Epenco [later trademark]

  NYC  1860 - ?

The famous pencil company also made a  lot of fountain pens. They also seem to have come up with a lot of fountain pen "firsts". One of their earliest "fountain pens" was a dip pen with an ink stick on it, so you only had to dip the pen in water to make it write. They made what probably is the first cartridge pen in1890. It had a glass cartridge that was pushed onto the back side of the pen section.  It was a brass pen with a coat of black or red enamel or nickel plate. They sold this pen for may years, I found a catalog listing in 1909 for it, but they may have sold it even longer. They later added coin filler and lever fillers that closely resembled the cartridge pen.  Their next pen was a hard rubber eyedropper followed by a twist filler. I believe that they made the first fountain pen pencil combo. They also may have been the first company to put a cap band on their pens.  Later they sold the Eagle flash which was a pull filler.  Their high point may have been the Eagle Prestige of the 1930s which had a bar under the blind cap to fill it. Some of the Prestige line pens had vent holes in the barrel. This was designed to let air circulate between the outer barrel and the inner ink chamber. the idea was the insulate the ink from the heat of you hand. Supposedly this would prevent ink flooding and dripping.  Sometime in the 30s they came out with a lower line of pens under the name Epenco. This line seemed to sell much better than their higher priced pens.  There were very few highlights in the Epenco line.  They did make a interesting pen with a moon and star pattern which is very similar to the Arnold pen. The Popeye fountain pen of the 1930s was also a success for them.
