The Autofiller fountain pen began life as a line of self
filling pens sold by the Schaaf Fountain Pen Co. Eventually they
decided that the Autofiller name had become so well known, they
changed the name to the Autofiller Fountain Pen Co. They did
offer some eyedropper filled pens, which is almost comical
considering the Autofiller name. The early models used a
small rod sticking out of the end of the barrel [which was covered
by a blind cap]. This was twisted to fill the pen. Later models had
a filling knob at the end of the barrel that was twisted for
filling. Most of the Autofiller pens are black hard rubber although
the catalogues do list a filigree. Aside from the change in the
filler the Autofiller line changed very little over the years.
The early models are all slip caps, but they started adding screw
cap pens around 1909 and the whole line seemed to be screw caps by
1920. |
