231 Greenwich St. or 19 Maiden Lane, NYC. Hicks was a prolific maker of
pens and pencils in sterling and solid gold. His manufacture of gold and
silver pens may have stemmed from his earlier manufacturing of thermometer
cases. He made magic pencils in his early days and in the 20s 30s and 40s
made gold pens for Tiffany and Cartier. His most common pen was a bulb
filler. A bulb filler has a center chamber to hold ink and below that
there is a rubber sac or bulb that is squeezed to draw ink up into the
chamber. These pens worked really well and were high quality. He sold
some pens under his name, but most of his work was sold through Tiffany
and Cartier.
